When to See a Wound Care Specialist?

Many times referrals to a wound care specialist are made through a patient’s primary care physician. Sometimes patients self refer. In those cases we will evaluate the patient, develop a treatment plan, and communicate the findings and plan to the primary care physician.

Common signs and symptoms that may accompany chronic, non-healing wounds and indicate that you may need our specialized services are:

  • Excessive swelling of the legs
  • Non-healing wounds (more than several weeks)
  • Pain with walking
  • Poor or no pulses in feet or legs
  • Rash around the wound site
  • Temperature or color change in the feet

  • Diabetic foot ulcers
  • Failing or compromised skin/muscle grafts or flaps
  • Gangrene
  • Lower leg ulcers
  • Pressure ulcers
  • Osteomyelitis
  • Post-operative infections
