Patient Testimonials and Reviews
Early detection of my thyroid cancer helped me get back on a path to better health.
I was running seven-to-eight miles a week in a park by my home and was working out in the gym regularly. Everything was fine with my health, until an abnormal bump on my thyroid forced me off the jogging path. My endocrinologist Dr. Brenda Acosta, in Doral, first noticed a lump near my throat and tested it with a biopsy. She thought I may have a type of thyroid cancer. After the biopsy on my thyroid Dr. Acosta referred me to Dr. Alia Abdulla, a surgical oncologist. Dr. Abdulla diagnosed me with a thyroid papillary carcinoma.
Prior to my thyroid surgery and injections, I had to be on a low iodine diet to lower hormone levels. Dr. Acosta and Dr. Abdulla explained this type of low iodine diet had to be done almost a month before my thyroid surgery so the remaining thyroid cells can become very hungry for the radioactive therapy. Medicine nowadays is just amazing!
Once my iodine level was lowered, Dr. Abdulla quickly scheduled my surgery at North Shore Medical Center in Miami. I was discharged on the second day. The day I was going to be discharged, Dr. Abdulla saw me to make sure I was going to be okay. I thought the staff at the hospital was great. They made sure I was taken care of and when I was stable, and took the time to make sure my daughter had something to eat while she was visiting me in the hospital. I saw Dr. Abdulla a week later so she could see how the stiches healed. Dr. Abdulla’s bedside manner is excellent and she is a nice person. Dr. Abdulla not only made me feel confident with her abilities, she made me and my daughter comfortable.
Since then, I had my first follow-up appointment with Dr. Acosta for a treatment called radioactive iodine therapy, or ablation to treat any cancerous cells still lingering. Dr. Acosta is a very nice person, she is very caring. Her staff is friendly and helpful; and the office is easy to get in and out of and there is plenty of parking.
I do go back to Dr. Abdulla every six months for checkups and to make sure my levels are in the healthy range. At Dr. Abdulla’s office the office staff is great and I never have had a problem with parking. Today, you can’t even see the scar where Dr. Abdulla did surgery on my thyroid. Two weeks after surgery, the scar was gone. Dr. Abdulla explained to me, due to the removal of the thyroid, I needed to plan to be on thyroid medicine for the rest of my life. When I was in the hospital, Dr. Abdulla made the decisions on my medication and today, Dr. Acosta manages my medicines.
I think Dr. Abdulla and Dr. Acosta did a great job in providing diagnosis and treatments for my thyroid cancer. They helped me, took the time to answer all of the questions my daughter and I had for them about the thyroid and surgery. Nowadays, with thyroid cancer behind me, I look forward to getting back to my jogging regimen in the park and in keeping fit at the gym.
