Luis’ Story

Luis Villamil – Life-Saving Heart Care At My Most Critical Moment

One minute I was dropping off paint cans at my rental and a nurse, heard the thud in the next room. She was the first responder and did CPR on me while calling 911 for help. I had no past medical history; I was perfectly healthy and athletic. The paramedics at Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue worked on me for 40 minutes and finally brought me back with the last shock. My fiancée later told me they needed a STEMI (ST-elevation myocardial infarction) team and since a local hospital wasn’t ready, they rushed me to North Shore Medical Center in Miami.

From the get go, Dr. Crudu has been amazing. He was the first person Susana saw when we arrived at the emergency room. He and his team were right there in the trauma room ready to go.

Dr. Crudu told Susana I was in very critical condition and had suffered a cardiac arrest. On my first day in the intensive care unit (ICU), Dr. Crudu did an echocardiogram and found that I suffered from cardiomyopathy. I was unconscious from the time I collapsed until five days later when I finally woke up on Christmas day. Dr. Crudu saved my life by performing a variety of procedures: a left heart catheterization, coronary angiogram, hypothermia catheter, which is a therapeutic cooling technique and finally, with the placement of a defibrillator, which gives quantities of electrical pulses to my heart.

Susana said Dr. Crudu included her in all the critical decisions and made sure she understood what was happening to me. She also told me later that my heart had an underlying weakness and chance of survival was less than 10 percent. These are the people you hear about when athletes or healthy people drop or collapse and usually don’t live to talk about it.

Thanks to Dr. Crudu, I now have a healthy heartbeat. In hindsight, my experience was miraculous. I remember the nurses and their friendly, personalized care. It’s not just a job for them. Dr. Crudu was amazing, and I have since gone back to thank him. His care and God’s grace has carried me forward.  We’re very appreciative of the resources at the hospital including the physicians, that’s why we drive 40 miles to still continue to see Dr. Crudu. Most importantly, he’s compassionate and he’s a great physician and we want to continue with him.

Susana and I enjoy traveling. Last year we went to Brisbane and Sydney, Australia for faith-based conferences. I am glad to say with the continued success of my recovery we are planning to travel to more faith-based conferences in the future. It was God first, Susana’s quick response and Dr. Crudu and his staff. These are the reasons I am able to enjoy my life today. Our faith is something that we have relied on since day one and we feel everything happens for a reason. I feel God used these physicians, nurses, and paramedics to aid me at my most critical moment. In the past, I had a weak heart, but today I am getting heart strong.
