Dr. Lance Simkins is now certified with the American Board of Clinical Lipidology (ABCL)

Tamarac, Fla. – December 27, 2016 – Lance Simkins, MD, FACC, an interventional cardiologist with Tenet Florida Physician Services (TFPS) has recently been awarded Diplomate status with the American Board of Clinical Lipidology (ABCL). The ABCL is a nonprofit certifying organization dedicated to reducing the morbidity and mortality from dyslipidemia and related diseases by assessing qualifications and certifying knowledge in clinical lipidology. Dr. Simkins has been an interventional cardiologist in South Florida since 1991 and joined TFPS in 2012. His TFPS offices are located in Tamarac and Boca Raton. Dr. Simkins is on staff at The Heart Institute of Florida at Florida Medical Center, a campus of North Shore in Fort Lauderdale, where he is the current Chief Wellness Officer. He is a member of the Tenet Florida Heart & Vascular Network.

Dr. Simkins joins more than 750 physicians across the nation who have achieved ABCL certification. This group of physicians have distinguished themselves amongst their colleagues and satisfied the credentialing and testing requirements established by the ABCL. For the ABCL certification he completed a range of continuing medical education requirements and successfully passed a rigorous examination to achieve this notable designation.

By concentrating on the optimal management of cholesterol, lipid disorders and diabetes, significant reductions in the risk of heart disease, stroke and vascular disease is certainly achievable,” said Dr. Simkins.

Professionals in the area of lipid management or “lipidologists” specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of cholesterol disorders known asdyslipidemia, which may cause atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease is responsible for approximately one-third of all deaths in the U.S. As a board-certified lipidologist, Dr. Simkins has achieved a high level of competency and understanding as a specialist in preventing dyslipidemia consisting of cholesterol and lipid disorders, and metabolic diseases including diabetes. Dr. Simkins focuses on preventing these metabolic diseases which can lead to heart disease, stroke or vascular disease. He combines this latest board-certification in clinical lipidology with over 25 years of experience as an expert in interventional cardiology care concentrated on saving lives from cardiovascular disease and in therapeutic management as an obesity medicine specialist.

Dr. Simkins has accomplished prior board certifications in internal medicine, cardiology, interventional cardiology, nuclear cardiology and obesity medicine. He became a certified health coach through a program with Villanova University in 2012 and is now focusing on introducing the concept of interventional wellness to the South Florida community.

Prior to joining TFPS, Dr. Simkins worked as a cardiologist in two separate private practices and as Director of a Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory in Tamarac. His teaching experience includes being a preceptor of senior medical student externships in cardiology with the Department of Internal Medicine, North Broward Hospital District, University of Florida College of Medicine and Nova Southeastern College of Osteopathic Medicine.

A local, Dr. Simkins was raised in North Miami Beach and completed fellowships in general cardiovascular medicine and interventional cardiology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He completed his internship and residency at Tampa General Hospital and Tampa Veterans Administration Hospital and graduated medical school from the University of South Florida College of Medicine in Tampa, FL. He has participated in numerous clinical research projects and has been practicing medicine since 1985.
