Dr. Lance Simkins of Tenet Florida Physician Services receives Obesity Medicine Certification

Tamarac, FL – April 23, 2015 – Lance Simkins, MD, FACC,  has been certified by the American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM) as a specialist in obesity medicine. Dr. Simkins with prior board certifications in internal medicine, cardiology, interventional cardiology and nuclear cardiology has now completed a rigorous training curriculum and examination process to achieve this notable designation. According to the ABOM, this designation represents the highest level of achievement in the medical specialty of obesity medicine, it signifies excellence in the practice of obesity medicine and distinguishes a physician as having achieved a high level of competency and understanding in obesity care. With this achievement in obesity medicine certification accomplished, Dr. Simkins became a certified health coach through a program with Villanova University in 2012 and is now focusing on introducing the concept of interventional wellness to the South Florida community.

As an obesity medicine physician, Dr. Simkins incorporates the diagnosis and treatment of genetic, biological, environmental, social and behavioral factors that contribute to obesity. Dr. Simkins also concentrates on the therapeutic management of obesity medicine by introducing patient interventions focused on diet, physical activity, behavioral change, pharmacotherapy, and surgical referrals when appropriate and desired.

Dr. Simkins has been an interventional cardiologist in South Florida since 1991 and joined Tenet Florida Physician Services (TFPS) in 2012. His office is located in Tamarac and he is on staff at The Heart Institute of Florida at Florida Medical Center, a campus of North Shore in Fort Lauderdale where he is the current chief wellness officer. Prior to joining TFPS, he worked as a cardiologist in two separate private practices and as director of a Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory in Tamarac. His teaching experience also includes as a preceptor of senior medical student externships in cardiology with the Department of Internal Medicine, North Broward Hospital District, University of Florida College of Medicine and Nova Southeastern College of Osteopathic Medicine.

A local, Dr. Simkins was raised in North Miami Beach and completed fellowships in general cardiovascular medicine and interventional cardiology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He completed his internship and residency at Tampa General Hospital and Tampa Veterans Administration Hospital and graduated medical school from the University of South Florida College of Medicine in Tampa, FL. He has participated in numerous clinical research projects and has been practicing medicine since 1998.
